There were three positions on the Ohio Supreme Court that were up for election in 2012, two full-term seats and one partial-term seat that expires on December 31, 2014. The first seat, with a term commencing on January 1, 2012, had two candidates—incumbent Justice Terrence O’Donnell (R) and Michael Skindell (D). Incumbent Justice Robert Cupp (R) and William O’Neill (D) were competing for the second seat, which had a term commencing on January 2, 2012. The partial-term seat had two candidates as well—incumbent Yvette McGee Brown (D), who was appointed to the seat on an interim basis, and Sharon Kennedy (R). While Ohio does not have partisan judicial elections, candidates are allowed to disclose their party affiliations.
The general election was held on November 6. Terrence O’Donnell was elected to the term starting Jan. 1 2013, William O’Neill was elected to the term commencing Jan. 2, 2012, and Sharon Kennedy was elected to the interim term expiring Dec. 31, 2014. For the seats without a partial term, justices serve for six years.
