Matthew Harwood was managing director of communications and strategy at the Brennan Center for Justice. Previously he was managing editor of the American Civil Liberties Union. Prior to this, Harwood handled communications for national security and privacy-related issues for the ACLU in Washington, DC. He worked on the Snowden disclosures and the resulting push to reform the NSA's surveillance powers. Before working for the ACLU, Harwood was an associate editor at Security Management magazine in Alexandria, Virginia, where he wrote extensively on homeland security matters. He holds a master of letters in international security studies from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.
