Eric Ruben

Fellow

Eric Ruben is an associate professor of law at SMU Dedman School of Law and a Brennan Center fellow. His current scholarship explores the regulation of violence and weapons and how that regulation intersects with self-defense and Second Amendment rights. 

Ruben’s academic work has been published or is forthcoming in the California Law ReviewDuke Law JournalGeorgetown Law JournalHarvard Law Review Forum, Iowa Law ReviewSouthern California Law Review, Yale Law Journal, and Yale Law Journal Forum, and he has been cited by the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals, and in legal briefs. He has testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee and frequently provides legal commentary for popular outlets, including ABC News, MSNBC, CNNthe New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Atlantic, Vox, SCOTUSblog, NPRand CBS Radio.

Prior to joining the faculty at SMU, Ruben was a fellow at the Brennan Center and an adjunct professor at NYU School of Law, where he taught a course on weapons regulation. He also worked as a criminal defense attorney at Morvillo Abramowitz Grand Iason & Anello. Before that, he served as a law clerk for Judge Julio M. Fuentes of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. Ruben received his undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College and his JD from NYU School of Law, where he was an articles editor for the NYU Law Review.
