In 2008, the Virginia-based Center for Individual Freedom (CFIF) spent more on television ads – an estimated $965,529 – than did the candidate they were supporting, Republican Greg Shaw, who purchased an estimated $884,828 worth of air time. CFIF ran a mixture of positive ads supporting Shaw and negative ads attacking his opponent, Democrat Deborah Bell Paseur. Judge Paseur lashed out at CFIF, claiming it was working as a front for the oil and gas industry. Judge Shaw and the CFIF narrowly outspent Judge Paseur, who ended up losing the race by a narrow margin.
