Benjamin Nyblade is the Brennan Center’s director of research, responsible for overseeing the organization’s interdisciplinary research efforts. He works with researchers and advocates across all the Brennan Center’s programs and initiatives, helping ensure the quality of the organization’s original research and that its legal and policy advocacy rests on rigorous research, sound evidence, and careful analysis.
Nyblade’s research has spanned law, the social sciences, and public policy, with a particular focus on democratic institutions, elections, and voting rights. He is the author of more than 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, including articles published in leading journals such as the American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, British Journal of Political Science, and Journal of Politics. His research has received numerous awards, including the 2023 Best Article Award from the Migration and Citizenship Section of the American Political Science Association for research examining migrant voting rights around the world.
Before joining the Brennan Center, Nyblade was director of the Empirical Research Group at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, professor of public policy at the Pardee RAND Graduate School, codirector of the UCLA-RAND Center for Law and Public Policy, Killam Research Fellow and assistant professor of political science at the University of British Columbia, and a fellow with the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research’s Institutions, Organizations, and Growth Program.
His BA is from Oberlin College, and his PhD is from the University of California, San Diego, where he was an Earl Warren Fellow.
