The Brennan Center joined with several organizations to submit comments to be considered in the recommendations of the President’s Task Force on 21st Century Policing. Created by an executive order signed December 18, 2014 by President Obama, the task force will provide recommendations to promote effective crime reduction and to build public trust.
Specifically, the letter recommended that the Task Force add the following recommendations to the final report:
- Implement effective independent review boards broadly representative of the community, not just municipal interests;
- Implement Success-Oriented Funding into federal law enforcement grants;
- Recommend that local law enforcement only use military weaponry in extreme and rare circumstances.
