Ethan Herenstein was counsel with the Brennan Center Democracy Program’s Voting Rights and Elections team. In addition to voting rights litigation and policy advocacy, Herenstein focused on combatting the so-called independent state legislature theory.

Herenstein previously served as a law clerk to the Hon. Jed S. Rakoff of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and worked as a fellow with the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program. Herenstein earned his JD from Stanford Law School, where he served as Senior Notes Editor of the Stanford Law Review. He also received a master’s degree in symbolic systems from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree, summa cum laude, in philosophy from Columbia University.
