Two seats were up for election to the New Mexico Supreme Court on November 3, 2020. A primary was held on June 2, 2020, in which all candidates ran unopposed. Justices in New Mexico must run in a partisan election for their first full term, before they run in up-or-down retention elections for subsequent terms, with each term lasting 8 years.
For position one, incumbent justice Shannon Bacon competed against former District Court Judge Ned S. Fuller. Bacon was appointed to the state supreme court in 2019 to replace retired Justice Charles W. Daniels. Bacon ran as a Democrat, and Fuller ran as a Republican. For position 2, incumbent Justice David K. Thompson, a Democrat, competed against Republican attorney Kerry Morris. Like Bacon, Thompson was appointed in 2019 to replace former Chief Justice Petra Jimenez Maes. Both Bacon and Thompson retained their seats.
