Eliazar Chacha

Counsel, Democracy

Eliazar Chacha is counsel in the Brennan Center’s Judiciary Program, where he works to realize a fair and inclusive judiciary system that protects fundamental rights, democratic values, and the rule of law. Prior to joining the center, Chacha was counsel to Sen. Laphonza Butler on the Senate Judiciary Committee, advising her on federal courts, criminal justice, public safety, antitrust, technology, and oversight of key agencies. Chacha also served as counsel to Rep. Pramila Jayapal on the House Judiciary Committee and Rep. Jackie Speier on the House Oversight Committee, as well as a fellow to Rep. Kweisi Mfume.

Chacha began his career as a litigator at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, where he was on the team that successfully represented Bobby James Moore before the U.S. Supreme Court in the notable death row case Moore v. Texas (2017).

Chacha received his BA with high honors from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MA in history from New York University. He also earned his JD with honors from Columbia Law School, where he was an editor of the Columbia Law Review, and his MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School, where he was a Zuckerman Fellow.
