In 2008, three candidates ran for the first district seat vacated by retiring Justice Pascal Calogero—Republican Judge Jimmy Kuhn, Democratic Judge Roland Belsome, and Republican Judge Greg Guidry. In a contest for the fifth district seat, First Circuit Judge Jeff Hughes challenged incumbent Justice Kitty Kimball . Guidry and Kimball won their respective seats. Candidates and special interest groups spent over $1 million on television ads in 2008, running a number of negative attack ads. This is a sharp increase from the $153,212 that was spent on television advertising in 2004.
