Buying Time 2008: Michigan

View ads and storyboards from state judicial election.

Published: October 15, 2008

In the 2008 election, the Michigan Democratic State Central Committee ran a number of ads linking Republican incumbent Justice Cliff Taylor to President George W. Bush. Capitalizing on Bush’s dwindling popularity, the ads attacked Justice Taylor. One ad, claiming Justice Taylor fell asleep on the job, was the subject of much attention during the election, with many questioning the veracity of the advertisement. The Republican Party and state Chamber of Commerce also ran a number of attack ads against challenger Diane Hathaway, a Circuit Court judge. The ads claimed Judge Hathaway was a terrorist sympathizer who was weak on crime and lazy. Total TV spending came to more than $3.6 million. Judge Hathaway won the election, marking the first time an incumbent chief justice lost a reelection bid in the court’s history.
