After the state experienced its first multi-million-dollar Supreme Court race in 2000, state lawmakers established a public financing system for appeals court races in 2002. In 2008, 11 out of 12 eligible candidates took advantage of the program. Judge Wanda Bryant of the North Carolina Court of Appeals argues, public financing “makes all the difference. I’ve run in two elections, one with campaign finance reform, and one without. I’ll take 'with’—any day, anytime, anywhere.”
In the 2008 race, incumbent Justice Robert Edmunds defeated challenger Suzanne Reynolds.
