Federal Attacks on the Freedom to Vote

Election deniers in Congress want to tilt the system in their favor by potentially disenfranchising millions of Americans.

Some members of Congress, fueled by conspiracy theories, have spent years developing policies that would restrict Americans’ freedom to vote in fair and secure elections. Following the 2024 election, these lawmakers have an opportunity to turn their anti-voter wish list into law.

Lies about the outcome of the 2020 presidential race triggered a wave of election denial. This movement, bent on twisting our system in its favor, incited an unprecedented flood of legislation to make it more difficult to vote and enable partisans to interfere with results. Many of these become law in states, but fortunately so far, not at the federal level. But not for a lack of trying: Over the past two years, we saw legislators on Capitol Hill champion bills aimed at drastically limiting access to the ballot box, undermining effective voter registration, rolling back campaign finance safeguards, and other harmful policies. In the 119th Congress, we expect to see more of the same.

These proposals could disenfranchise millions of eligible Americans, erode nonpartisan election administration, and widen the floodgates for unregulated money in our politics. This page compiles resources on these efforts and the dangerous lies used to justify them.
