Timeline of Ohio’s Gerrymandered Maps: How Ohio Politicians Defied Court Orders to Manipulate Legislative Districts

During the 2021 redistricting cycle, self-interested politicians continuously gerrymandered voting districts despite attempts by the Ohio Supreme Court to help implement fair maps.

The current redistricting process in Ohio allows politicians to gerrymander voting districts behind closed doors and deny voters fair representation. The Ohio Supreme Court ruled five times that the state legislative maps drawn by politicians were unconstitutional, and in a separate case, it also struck down the state’s congressional maps twice. But politicians continued the backroom work to gerrymander the state, demonstrating that the current redistricting system is broken beyond repair. 

The Brennan Center represented Ohio-based organizations and individual voters challenging the state legislative maps in 2021. Below is a timeline of the litigation.
